Almost exactly two years since his purchase on gavelhouse.com in the first online auction held by the New Zealand Bloodstock-owned site Merrygowin took his career earnings to nearly 5.5 times his purchase price with a win at Happy Valley.
Trained by Paul O’Sullivan, the son of Castledale was secured for $68,000 and has since amassed HK$1.9 million courtesy of two wins and six placings from 21 starts.
Prepared to win a trial at Foxton by Awapuni-based conditioner Gary Vile, Merrygowin was offered on account of Wayne Larsen’s Te Runga Stud who stood Castledale.
Stepping up over the mile for the first time and carrying the equal top weight of 60.5kg he settled well in fourth with good speed in the race during the mid-stages.
Having shot clear on the inside in the straight he managed to hold on with a nose the winning margin from the lesser weighted swoopers Gentry and a further head to Sparkling Sword.
