Reigning Newcomer to Training sponsored by gavelhouse.com winner Andrew Carston notched up 20 winners for the 2018 season and the well-named I’llav Bubbles has kicked off the new season in flying form for the stable with her second win in a month at Riccarton on Saturday.
The now seven-year-old daughter of Sir Percy and Phillipa Glass has been in training with Carston for almost a full year, earning connections over $41,000.
On Saturday in the Riccarton Racecourse Hotel & Motor Lodge 1800m she was afforded a gun run with jockey Kylie Williams settling her in the box-seat for the trip. Finding the middle of the track in the last furlong, I’llav Bubbles put on a tenacious display, being headed on multiple occasions and still managing to stick her neck out to win by just 0.2 of a length.
A worthy recipient of the Newcomer award, Carston commented on the win “I’llav Bubbles is absolutely flying and has pulled up super after the race, we are really happy with her.”
“She will be running again on the 22nd of September at Riccarton and while she is in fine form we will keep going with her and look to spell her in time to come.”
Carston currently has 30 horses in training, with five nominated to run in feature races at Riccarton in early November.
“We have a great bunch of horses in work at the moment, a nice young team of 30 untried horses which is always exciting,”
“They are ready to step out for the spring and we are looking forward to seeing them perform.”
Carston’s five nominated for Cup Week features include Go Racing’s Aristotle (Pins) in the Gr.1 Al Basti Equiworld Dubai New Zealand Two Thousand Guineas and Severine (Pins) in the Gr.1 gavelhouse.com 46th New Zealand One Thousand Guineas (1600m) plus Zacinto filly Suffragette. In the Gr.2 Couplands Bakeries Mile Hee’s Our Secret (Sakhee’s Secret) is the stable’s hope while Shocktillyoudrop (Shocking) holds a nomination for the Gr.3 Christchurch Casino 155th New Zealand Cup (3200m).
