A move to Les Kelly’s Gold Coast stable looks to have worked the oracle for gavelhouse.com Australia graduate Reiby The Red who off the back of two placings since, went one better at Doomben on Saturday to win over in the Class 3 Plate over 1615m.
Purchased online in June last year for $20,000 the new connections are happy with how the seven-year-old gelding is thriving with his earnings since transferring to Kelly’s stable earlier this year up to $34,500.
Formerly trained in Sydney by Jason Attard, Reiby The Red was offered on account of Lucy Keegan Attard having good Sydney form to his credit. When sold he had banked just over $200,000 in earnings thanks to winning three and 14 placings including in the Listed Rowley Mile at his home track.
New owner Bob Mumford said Kelly has given the horse a new lease on life and the change of environment has suited to him well.
“We’ve only had the horse with Les for a few months and all three of his runs have been outstanding, he’s turning back the clock,” offered Mumford.
“He’s run second a lot this horse, so to see him cling on for the win is a credit to the work the stable’s done.”
As a new addition to the stable the gelding’s last couple of starts had Kelly approaching the race with a firm plan in place and after talking with jockey Michael Murphy the plan was to get the son of Dane Shadow going early.
“He’s been a bit one paced and he’s been looking for more ground, so the plan was to pour the pressure on at the 450m and Michael pushed the button at the right time,” Kelly explained.
“We put the spurs on and gave him a little dig behind the gates and he jumped nicely, which allowed us to sit outside the leader,” offered Murphy.
“King Dinisty kicked a couple clear at the turn, but I knew my horse was travelling well and he wore him down.”
