Talented three-year-old son of Tavistock Tavisan resumed in style when winning at Sandown on Wednesday and looks capable of achieving the lofty goals set for him this preparation.

Bred by the Sunlight Trust, he was sold on gavelhouse.com in September 2016 for $100,000 and was pin-hooked by Hallmark Stud to Karaka where he was purchased by Ontrack Thoroughbreds.

Having had his early education in New Zealand, Tavisan was then put into training with Mick Price, who knows a thing or two about the progeny of Cambridge Stud stallion Tavistock and even put the polish on the top-class sire himself during a brief stint in Melbourne in the Autumn of 2010.

Jumping well as usual on Wednesday the Group-placed gelding Tavisan was able to dictate speed in the early stages over the 1000m trip. Despite looking to run a little keen, he finished a length clear of the field for the victory.

“That’s what we expected today, he’s been going well at home and been lovely and sound,” offered co-trainer Michael Kent Junior.

“The plan is to look at stepping him up in class now so there’s the Bletchingly over 1200m or the Lightning in Adelaide over 1050m so we’ll get through this week and make a plan.”

With Ben Melham in the saddle, he found the best position to race in very windy conditions. Melham offered, “He’s a nice horse, travelled well in front and let down well. He’s a bit well, so he’s got good improvement left, and he should have a bright future.”

“He’s a very quick horse, very quick from the gates with good tactical speed. To me, he feels like a sprinter, although his breeding might tell you otherwise. He’s got a good advantage he gain from early on in the race and put himself in a good spot, travel well, and he’s got good ability to finish the race off.”

Tavisan is out of the Volksraad mare Evanescence and from the family of five-time Group One winner Super Impose.

Entries for the next fortnightly online auction are due by 7pm Monday with the auction closing from 7pm Monday 22 July. Contact the gavelhouse.com team on +64 9 296 4436 or email info@gavelhouse.com for more information.
