Saturday’s $30,000 William the Protector Premier (1200m) at Trentham produced a remarkable result for low-priced gavelhouse.com purchase Opalescence (NZ) (Showcasing).
Trainer and part-owner Jenna Mahoney paid just $1,000 to buy the filly as a weanling in March of 2018. After Saturday’s impressive front-running performance, Opalescence has now won two of her three starts and $37,310 in prize-money.
Opalescence was ridden by Sam Collett on Saturday and led all the way, turning back a bold challenge from Boomer Hill (Spirit of Boom) to win by half a length. The rest of the field finished another three lengths behind the first pair.
“I saw her on gavelhouse.com and I’m a big fan of Showcasing, so I ended up buying her for cheap,” Mahoney said. “I brought in a guy who does a bit of work for me, and we’re having a lot of fun with her.
“She will come back up north next week and will have a bit of a spell, and then we might set her for something decent in the autumn. It might be the Matamata Breeders’ Stakes (Group 2, 1200m), but we will wait and see.” – Richard Edmunds.
